Mountain Movers Performance

This past Friday evening I attended the “Mountain Movers Dance Company” show at Milligan College (a company that includes many dancers and several dance professors from ETSU). It was an eventful show with three parts, and two intermissions. There were a variety of dances throughout the show. The first part included three routines with the silks, including a group routine, a duet, and a solo. There was also a floor group dance. The first section was very light and humorous, with a lot of acting and facial expressions. They had silent movie music play in between each dance which not only helped blend the routine together well, but also allowed the dancers to continue their comedy from dance to dance. The second section was much deeper and more emotional than the first. With more modern pieces, each dance told a story, and the dancers did a wonderful job of portraying each story. Just as well, the dance moves went very well with the music choices, which made it even more compelling. The third part had the theme of time running throughout each dance, both floor and aerial dances. There were several group pieces in this section, but the most memorable one was a duet in which the dancers sped up and slowed down with the tempo of the music which was very representational of the effects of time.

The music that played between each routine/scene really blended the show together smoothly, leaving no room for awkward pauses. Although I was initially curious as to why there were two intermissions instead of only one, I realized that it helped to separate the show very nicely, and did not allow the audience to get bored because there were only several dances in each part. The dancers all did a wonderful job of acting with their faces and portraying emotions in each dance. You can really tell how rigorous aerial work is just from looking at the dancers, because they all have incredible arm and back muscles, and well as their legs. I really enjoyed watching this show because I had never watched aerial dance before, and it was very exciting to watch. It definitely peaked my interest on the dance style, and I am thinking about maybe trying aerial at some point in my dancing career at ETSU. I definitively plan to attend the next Mountain Movers performance that comes along.
